Five connected desks

One circular loop for every box that moves through Chicagoland

Boxes Chicago runs five distinct desks that share one warehouse floor and one philosophy: keep good fiber in use as long as it can carry weight. Buying, selling, recycling, hauling and upcycling are not separate departments competing for your attention; they are stations on a single loop that a box travels until it truly cannot be reused. From our Alsip base at 11690 S Austin Ave we serve the whole region with reuse-first thinking and honest grading.

What the five desks actually do

Each desk handles one direction of box movement. The buy desk purchases surplus corrugated and Gaylord boxes that would otherwise be flattened or landfilled. The sell desk offers graded used and new stock to businesses that need reliable packaging without paying full retail. The recycle desk recovers fiber that has reached the end of its useful life and routes it to certified mills.

The haul desk moves boxes between sites, from your dock to ours or from one of your locations to another. The upcycle desk redesigns retired corrugated into new products and displays for brands that want a visible circular story. Together they mean a box rarely leaves the loop before its material value is fully spent.

Because the desks live under one roof, a load that arrives to be recycled often gets partly diverted to the sell desk when the grader spots reusable pieces. That internal handoff is where most of the value is created, and it happens without you managing five vendors.

How the loop connects into a circle

A box enters the loop when a manufacturer or distributor has surplus. We buy it, grade it, and offer the sound units through the sell desk to another business. That business uses the box, and when it wears out the recycle desk recovers the fiber for a mill, which pulps it into new board.

Along the way the haul desk carries units between stops so nobody drives half-empty trucks, and the upcycle desk pulls select stock out for redesign into displays, organizers or custom shippers. Every arrow points back into the same system rather than out to a dumpster.

The circle is not a marketing diagram. It is the physical path your fiber takes, and each pass through it delays the moment new trees or new energy are needed to make replacement board from scratch.

Who uses each desk

Manufacturers, third-party logistics operators and large retailers lean on the buy and haul desks because they generate steady surplus and want it gone cleanly. E-commerce sellers, movers, nonprofits and small shops lean on the sell desk because graded used boxes cut their packaging spend without cutting reliability.

Recycling is used by anyone facing an audit, a sustainability report or simply a full baler they cannot empty fast enough. Upcycling attracts brands, event planners and product companies that want packaging or fixtures with a documented reuse story behind them.

Many customers touch several desks at once. A distributor might sell us surplus in the morning and buy graded stock in the afternoon, all on one truck movement coordinated by the haul desk.

How to start with us

Starting is deliberately low-friction. Email info@boxeschicagoil.com with what you have or what you need, your location, and rough volume. Photos help enormously for the buy and recycle desks because they let a grader estimate condition before anyone drives anywhere.

For selling to you, tell us the box dimensions, the job, and how many you expect to need over a month or a quarter. We will suggest a grade and send a sample so you can test it in your own line before committing to a full order.

There is no phone by design, which keeps every quote, spec and schedule in writing where both sides can reference it. Written trails prevent the small misunderstandings that cost time in the box business.

The local Chicagoland advantage

Being rooted in Alsip and serving the surrounding metro means our trucks run short routes. Short routes cut fuel, cut emissions, and cut the cost we have to pass along. A box that travels twenty miles to a new user beats one shipped across three states or pulped and remade from scratch.

Local density also means we can combine movements. When several customers along the same corridor need pickups or deliveries in the same week, we relay loads instead of dispatching separate half-full trucks.

Proximity builds trust too. When you can point at the warehouse your surplus went to, sustainability claims stop being abstract and become something you can show an auditor, a customer or a board.

Grading is the common language

Everything the five desks do rests on consistent grading. A box is judged on wall type, crush, moisture history, flap condition, print and cleanliness. That single vocabulary lets the buy desk price fairly, the sell desk match stock to jobs, and the recycle desk decide what still has reuse life.

Because the same graders touch inbound buys and outbound sells, the standard never drifts between transactions. What we call a B-grade box today is the same thing we called a B-grade box last month.

Consistent grading is also what makes the loop trustworthy. You are not guessing at quality; you are ordering against a known scale that we apply the same way every time.

Getting the most from all five desks

  • Email photos with any buy or recycle inquiry to speed grading
  • Bundle pickups and deliveries on the same corridor to cut trips
  • Ask for a sample before committing to a truckload
  • Tell us your monthly volume so we can plan standing routes
  • Keep box dimensions and job details in one message
  • Flag any audit or ESG deadline early so documentation is ready
  • Separate clean corrugated from contaminated material at the dock
  • Reuse the same grade language across every order

Questions & answers

Do I have to use all five desks?
No. Each desk stands alone, and plenty of customers only ever buy from us or only ever sell to us. The loop is available if you want it, not a package you are forced into.
Can one truck handle both a pickup and a delivery?
Often yes. If you are selling us surplus and buying graded stock in the same window, the haul desk will try to combine both movements on one visit to save cost and emissions.
Why is there no phone number?
By design, everything runs through info@boxeschicagoil.com so quotes, specs and schedules stay in writing. Written records prevent the small verbal mix-ups that are common in fast-moving box logistics.
How fast can I get started?
Send an email with your location, volume and either what you have or what you need. Most inquiries get a first response and a grading or spec question quickly, and photos accelerate everything.
Do you serve areas outside Alsip?
We serve the broader Chicagoland region from our Alsip base. Short local routes are central to how we keep costs and carbon down, so density in the metro is where we work best.
What happens to a box at the end of the loop?
When a box can no longer carry weight safely, the recycle desk recovers its fiber and delivers it to a certified mill. Recycling is the backup that catches material only after reuse has been exhausted.
The Boxes Chicago System

How Our Five Desks Interlock

Most box problems are not one problem. A warehouse cleanout might be part surplus you can sell, part recovered stock we buy, part fiber that only recycling can capture, and part awkward oversize freight that needs a truck. Boxes Chicago runs five coordinated desks so a single site visit can settle all of it. This deeper layer explains how buying, selling, recycling, hauling and upcycling hand work off to each other, and how to pick the right entry point for your situation.

One Visit, Five Outcomes

Our desks are not silos. When our team walks a dock, they sort inventory into streams on the spot: resale-grade cartons routed to the sell desk, clean surplus we purchase through the buy desk, mixed OCC bound for recycling, and anything unusual flagged for upcycling. That triage is the real service.

The advantage of one vendor covering all five is that nothing falls through the cracks. You are not calling a broker for surplus, a hauler for the rest, and a recycler for the fiber. A single Alsip-based crew reconciles the whole load, which cuts your coordination time and usually your net cost.

We build the plan around reuse first. Every carton that can be re-boxed or resold is diverted before anything is baled. That ordering is deliberate: reuse preserves the most value and the most embodied energy, and it keeps material out of the waste stream longer.

Which Desk Fits Which Situation

If you generate more boxes than you consume, you likely need the buy or recycle desks. If you consume more than you generate, the sell desk is your anchor. Most operations do both across a year, which is why relationships with us tend to run in both directions seasonally.

Gaylords and bulk bins follow their own logic. A clean, food-grade or triple-wall Gaylord has real resale value and belongs on the buy or sell desk. A crushed or contaminated one is a recycling or haul-away question. We grade each unit rather than treating the pallet as one lot.

When the material is odd, damaged, or branded in a way that blocks resale, the upcycling desk often turns what would be a disposal cost into something usable, from partitions to protective inserts to display fixtures.

Reuse-First As An Operating Rule

Recycling is genuinely valuable, but it is the third-best outcome for a corrugated box, behind reuse and repair. A box baled into OCC loses its structure and must be repulped, screened and reformed before it carries anything again. Reuse skips all of that.

Our default is to test every carton for a second, third or fourth trip before it is downgraded to fiber. Double-wall and heavy single-wall boxes frequently survive several cycles when handled well, and we track condition so buyers know what they are getting.

This is also why our pricing rewards clean, dry, flattened material. The cleaner the input, the more of it stays in the reuse economy, and the better the economics run for everyone in the chain.

Local Density Is The Advantage

We operate inside Chicagoland, from Alsip out through the south and southwest suburbs and into the city. Tight geography means shorter routes, faster turnarounds and the ability to combine a pickup and a delivery on the same run when the timing lines up.

Density also stabilizes supply. Because we are constantly moving boxes in and out across nearby accounts, we can often match a seller's surplus to a buyer's need within days rather than weeks, keeping material circulating locally instead of shipping fiber long distances.

For recurring accounts, that proximity supports scheduled service, so your dock is not the bottleneck and boxes do not pile into walkways or fire lanes.

How Pricing Logic Connects The Desks

Buy prices, sell prices and haul fees are not set in isolation. When resale demand for a grade is strong, we can pay more to buy it and still move it profitably, which is why telling us what you have early helps you capture the better number.

Recycling rebates and haul fees sit at the other end. Contaminated, wet or baled-poorly material costs more to process, so it earns less or carries a fee. The cleaner your stream, the more it tilts toward the paid side of the ledger.

Upcycling can change the math entirely on damaged goods. Material with no resale or fiber value can still have fabrication value, which sometimes turns a disposal line item into a small credit or a low-cost custom product.

Documentation And Accountability

Every transaction can be documented: what was bought, what was sold, what was diverted from landfill, and what was hauled. For businesses with sustainability commitments, that paper trail matters as much as the boxes themselves.

We keep the reporting practical rather than performative. Weights, counts and diversion figures are recorded so you can fold them into internal ESG reporting or waste audits without reconstructing them after the fact.

Because one vendor touches all five streams, the numbers reconcile cleanly. There is no gap between what a hauler counted and what a recycler weighed, because it is the same account.

Getting Started

The fastest start is a short description of your material and a few photos: rough counts, box grades, whether they are flattened, and any Gaylords or oddities. From that we can usually tell you which desk leads and roughly what to expect.

For larger sites, a walkthrough beats photos. We can sort on site, quote the buy and sell portions, and schedule any hauling or recycling in one plan rather than several disconnected calls.

There is no phone line by design; email info@boxeschicagoil.com with the details and we route it to the right desk from there.

Choosing The Right Entry Point

  • Describe your material before choosing a desk; the right one is often not obvious.
  • Flatten and keep boxes dry to maximize buy value and minimize haul fees.
  • Separate Gaylords from standard cartons; they grade differently.
  • Flag branded or contaminated stock so it routes to upcycling, not resale.
  • Bundle a pickup and delivery in one window when you can.
  • Ask for diversion documentation if you report on sustainability.
  • Send counts and photos to speed up any quote.
  • For recurring overflow, set a schedule rather than calling ad hoc.

Questions & answers

Can one visit cover buying, selling and hauling together?
Yes, that is the core design. Our crew sorts material into streams on site, quotes the buy and sell portions, and schedules any recycling or hauling in the same plan. You deal with one account instead of several vendors.
Do I have to pick the right desk myself?
No. Tell us what you have and we route it. Many jobs touch several desks, and we handle the triage so you do not have to guess which category your material falls into.
Why reuse before recycling?
Reuse preserves a box's structure and embodied energy for another trip. Recycling breaks the box down and repulps it, which is valuable but consumes more energy and value. We test every carton for reuse before downgrading it to fiber.
What area do you serve?
Chicagoland, centered on Alsip and reaching through the south and southwest suburbs and into the city. Tight geography lets us run shorter routes and often combine pickups and deliveries.
Can you document what was diverted from landfill?
Yes. Weights, counts and diversion figures are recorded so they can feed into ESG reporting or waste audits. Because one vendor handles all streams, the numbers reconcile without gaps.
How do I start without a phone number?
Email info@boxeschicagoil.com with a short description, rough counts and a few photos. We identify the lead desk and reply with next steps and an estimate range.
