Reading the Load Ratings

Bulk box specifications typically list a maximum gross weight and, often, a static stacking rating. Gross weight covers what one box can safely hold. Stacking capacity covers how much additional weight can rest on top over time. Both matter, and they are not the same number, so read the certificate carefully.

Duration and environment quietly reduce these limits. A box rated for a heavy static load may sag if it sits stacked for weeks, and humidity steadily erodes corrugated compression strength. Build in a safety margin rather than loading to the printed maximum, especially in unconditioned Chicagoland warehouses where seasonal moisture swings are real. Fit, Liners, and Closures

Reclaimed triple-wall Gaylords are a strong value play. Boxes retired from one shipper often have plenty of life left for a less demanding user. Sourcing graded used bulk boxes and returning spent ones into a reuse stream, rather than baling them after one trip, keeps sturdy fiber in service and lowers total packaging spend across the region.

Inspect Before You Reload

A triple-wall box earns its reuse only if it is still structurally sound. Before refilling, check corners and edges for crushing, since compromised corners collapse first under stack load. Look for delamination where liners peel from the fluting, soft spots that signal moisture damage, and any punctures from previous sharp contents.

Reject boxes with crushed vertical edges, water staining, or mushy walls; downgrade them to recycling rather than risking a failure with heavy product. Boxes that pass inspection can be reused with confidence, sometimes with a fresh liner.
