A box sitting directly on that slab draws moisture up through its bottom flaps, which is exactly where stacking strength is most needed.

The fix is simple and cheap: always store corrugated on pallets, racking, or dunnage, never in direct contact with the floor. This single habit prevents a huge share of moisture damage, especially in older buildings and during seasonal swings. It also keeps the bottom layer clean and away from spills and forklift splash, extending the reusable life of your most vulnerable boxes.

Mind Walls, Doors, And Airflow

Exterior walls and loading dock doors are the next moisture traps. Walls develop condensation when outside temperatures differ from inside, and open dock doors let humid air pour in and settle on nearby stock. Keep box inventory a foot or more off exterior walls and away from doors that open frequently, giving air room to move rather than pooling against the cardboard.

Airflow itself is protective. Stagnant air lets local humidity build up inside tightly packed stacks, so leave gaps for circulation and avoid cramming bundles wall to wall. In larger facilities, fans or proper HVAC that keeps air moving and humidity stable does more to preserve corrugated than most people expect. The goal is a dry, evenly conditioned pocket of space rather than still, damp corners.

Control Humidity Where It Counts

You cannot always air-condition an entire warehouse, but you can prioritize the space that holds your best boxes. Aim to keep the storage environment within a moderate, stable relative humidity band, because it is the swings and the sustained highs that do the damage. Sudden changes drive condensation, and prolonged high humidity slowly saps strength across the whole inventory.

In practical terms this can mean a dehumidifier in a smaller storage room, better sealing around doors, or simply staging premium boxes in the most climate-stable part of the building. During humid Chicago summers these measures matter most, as outdoor dew points climb and any poorly conditioned space becomes a slow-motion moisture problem. A little targeted humidity control protects a lot of box value.

Rotate Stock And Inspect

Even in good conditions, boxes should not sit indefinitely. Use first-in-first-out rotation so older stock gets used before it has time to absorb ambient moisture across many seasons. Long-dormant bundles in a back corner are the ones most likely to have quietly degraded, so bring them into the working rotation deliberately rather than letting them age out.
